Star of the North Retreat Centre, St. Albert, is seeking to fill the position of full-time (30-40 hours weekly) Chef responsible for all aspects of Food and Beverage Service on site at the center. Along with regular weekday shifts, some weekend and evening shifts required.
We are a charitable Retreat Centre serving the needs of our own spiritual programming for the community, and also serving outside faith-based organizations, churches and groups in central Alberta and beyond. We provide nourishing, healing menus, and strive for sustainable garden to table food service as part of our mission to be a place of healing, wellness and peace for those who seek retreat nd renewal. We run a plated service on a cold and hot line for an eighty-plus capacity dining room.
Responsibilities include (not limited to):
menu-planning, staff scheduling and supervision, staff training, food ordering and preparation, purchasing kitchen supplies, repair/maintenance of appliances when needed, inventory control, food purchases, working with an overall budget, participate in monthly, yearly budget planning as required, regulate expenditures on a per meal served basis, making healthy, sustainable (i.e. ecologically sustainable) meals from scratch, ability to accommodate special diets (e.g. vegetarian, celiac, diabetes, etc.), maintaining a clean, orderly kitchen, .
Qualities:
Leadership and supervision experience. Level-headed, flexible and calm under pressure. Ability to sustain a safe, enjoyable work environment. Excellent time management and punctuality. Strong team communication skills.
Open to learning from and collaborating with staff to live out The Star vision, mission and values. Enthusiasm to work in a collegial, harmonious environment.
Open to working collaboratively with the Star Regenerative Garden team during the growing season for meal planning and harvesting with key kitchen staff.

Education and Experience:
Minimum 5 years experience as a Red Seal Chef in an institutional kitchen setting, Food Safety Certificate, Police Record Check, WHMIS, required. Salary $30-$35 per hour or based on experience. Experience with retreat ministry and/or charitable/ non-profit organisations an asset.
